Brand Feature: Equine Confections
In the spirit of community over competition, I'm excited to continue the Brand Feature Series. Each month, I feature another woman owned equestrian small business that I love. This month we get to know Sarah, the creator of Equine Confections! (and the maker of our special edition Dapplebay Gourmet Treats!)
Tell us about Equine Confections.
As an avid dressage competitor and professional FEI level dressage groom, I wanted to create quality tasting treats with only the best quality ingredients. From this passion, Equine Confections was born! Equine Confections makes sophisticated and fun gourmet horse treats for you and your equine partner. All of our treats are made with only a handful of ingredients. Equine Confections plans to change the treat industry as you know it by creating the most unique, handcrafted and original treats for your equine friends.
Why did you start the business?
As a young equestrian and entrepreneur with a baking background, I started EQC back in 2016. I wanted to bring a gourmet product to the market that was original and affordable for all equestrians. I saw a gap in the industry and wanted to offer a product that I, myself, would want to feed my own horse. Taking my baking background and combining it with my passion for horses was my best decision ever. EQC continues to elevate the equine confection industry one cookie, sugar cube, and peppermint piaffe at a time!
What is your favorite thing about owning the business?
My favorite part of owning Equine Confections is crafting unique and original products. Everything I do is for the horse and I take a lot of pride in crafting products that so many equines and owners love. Our treats are for all equestrians and It’s been great to watch an amazing supportive community grow around EQC.
What has been the biggest challenge of owning the business?
Growing product demand is resulting in space and inventory management challenges. Expansion is on my mind but it’s scary; similar to going left shoulder to left shoulder with a chestnut mare with a red ribbon in her tail (if you know you know)! As an entrepreneur I take everything in stride and am up for all the challenges that will build and better the brand in the long run!
What is some advice you would give to entrepreneurs?
From one small business owner to another I know it may get hard but stay kind, be supportive, and stay original. Being kind and supporting one another as an entrepreneur is a huge character builder and I really find it shapes a brand’s character. Running a business is not easy and I’ve learned so much over the years but it is so incredibly important to hold onto your creativity and, most importantly, stay original.
